The Municipality of Piraeus is participating in the events of the ‘Thermopylae – Salamis 2020’ Anniversary Year, as announced by the Mayor Mr Giannis Moralis, in the framework of his meeting with the President of the Honorary Committee of the Anniversary Year, Ms Marianna Vardinoyannis, on Tuesday 25 February 2020.

The Municipality of Piraeus is planning to implement a series of events in the framework of the celebrations for the 2500 years since the Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis.

These actions will be implemented in cooperation with the Executive Committee of the ‘Marianna V. Vardinoyannis Foundation’ for the ‘Thermopylae – Salamis 2020’ Anniversary Year.  On the side of the ‘Marianna V. Vardinoyannis Foundation’, the person in charge of the actions to be implemented in Piraeus will be Ms Athanasia Marinaki.

“2020 will be an important year for our country, because, among many other important events, we are honouring the Battles at Thermopylae and Salamis, two battles that changed the course of the history of the world and protected western civilisation. It is a National affair and I am very pleased that the person in charge of it is Ms Marianna Vardinoyannis, with a remarkable Honorary Committee consisting of members from Greece and abroad.  With my participation and that of the Municipality of Piraeus, our intention is to support this major effort being made. Piraeus is geographically beside the area where the Battle of Salamis took place and cannot but play a dominant role in the celebration. We are in direct communication both with Ms Vardinoyannis and with the competent Ministries of Culture and the Interior, in order to do our best in a series of approximately 10 events, which we will very soon be in a position to announce. We, too, will contribute to this entire effort, through the Culture and Youth Organisation of the Municipality and our Municipal Theatre, which will be at the disposal of this National effort”, stated Mr Moralis.

Ms Vardinoyannis thanked the Mayor of Piraeus for his support in promoting this national anniversary, and said: “I would like to warmly thank the Mayor of Piraeus Mr Giannis Moralis, and all of Piraeus, too, for embracing the important national Anniversary of the 2500 years since the Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis.  Our goal is to highlight the importance of these battles and the values of Western civilisation on an international level, as they are two landmark events in the history of humanity”.

Ms Vardinoyannis also mentioned the important contribution of Ms Marinakis to the implementation of these initiatives: “I would like to warmly thank Ms Marinakis for the important work she is doing in promoting this national Anniversary.   Her contribution to the cooperation we are setting out on with the Municipality of Piraeus is valuable”, stated Mr Vardinoyannis, in reference to the contribution of Ms Marinakis.

Ms Marinakis in turn warmly thanked Mr Moralis for his support and stressed that discussions regarding the actions to be implemented in collaboration with the Municipality of Piraeus are moving along and that there will soon be announcements regarding their content.
